  • A transfer adds a year on top of the time you’ve already paid for, so you lose nothing by moving early (up to 10 years in total).
  • Registered or transferred in the last 60 days? The current registrar can refuse until day 60.
  • Before moving: turn off the transfer lock and get the auth (EPP) code at your current registrar.
  • Standard prices. Premium names and prices in other currencies can differ.

How the saving is worked out

  1. Staying: what you pay to renew, times the years, times the number of domains.
  2. Moving: each registrar’s transfer price (which includes the first year), then its standard renewal for the remaining years. Where a transfer adds no year (.uk), every year is a renewal on top of the transfer fee.
  3. The saving: staying minus the cheapest move. Under $3.00 over the period, we say it isn’t worth the time.

Standard prices from each registrar’s own price list, read Oct 11, 2026, 10:23 AM UTC. Transfer rules from ICANN’s Transfer Policy: a transfer adds one year (up to 10 in total); the current registrar may refuse one within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer, and has five calendar days to respond. Common questions

Is it worth transferring my domain to another registrar?

When the move saves more than a few dollars over the years you plan to keep it (we use $3.00). Compare the renewal price after the transfer, not just the transfer price: a cheap transfer followed by a dear renewal can cost more over two years than staying. For .com today, the cheapest move over two years is $21.76 at Dynadot (the transfer plus one renewal), against $28.54 for two years at the typical renewal price.

Does transferring a domain add a year?

For .com, .net, .org and other generic extensions, yes: ICANN’s Transfer Policy adds one year to the existing registration, up to 10 years in total. Country codes set their own rules; .uk transfers, for example, are free and add no year.

Do I lose the time left on my domain when I transfer?

No, for generic extensions. The added year goes on top of the time you have already paid for, so moving a month or a year before renewal costs the same.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Up to five days. Once you start the transfer at the new registrar, the current one has five calendar days to respond; if it doesn’t, the transfer goes through. Approving the confirmation email usually makes it faster.

When can’t I transfer a domain?

Within 60 days of registering it or of a previous transfer, the current registrar may refuse. You also need to turn off the transfer lock and get the auth (EPP) code from your current registrar first.

Why is a registrar missing for some extensions?

Not every registrar publishes a transfer price for every extension. A missing price is left out, never estimated.

Do you keep what I type?

No. The calculator runs in your browser on today’s published prices. We count that the tool was used and the extension, nothing else.
